The 2012 Giant XTC Composite is a big step forward for performance hardtails. It uses a Fox 32 F29 RLC FIT Fork, which helps bring the weight down, but that improvement is completely shadowed by the new frame. It uses GIANT Composite technology, which culminates in optimal performance at a low manufacturing cost, a win-win situation for both the fabricator and consumer. The drivetrain is a mixture of SRAM X-9, and X-0 for the rear derailleur. The brakes are a slightly lower level Avid Elixir 7, however these are more than enough for descending down all manner of slopes with a respectable weight to boot. A recommendation is to change the disks to Jet Black for better response, which means more control. Believe it or not, the stock disks only cost about $30 each - less if you buy them online. To top it off, Giant PC-XC2 29er Performance rims which are reasonably lightweight and have low rolling resistance.
All this comes at a relatively low cost of $2999, however most bike shops should have them on special for $2499. Like most of Giant's offerings, these bikes are great value for money (most composite hard tails are closer to $5000).
